I am an artist living and working in Lismore, on Bundjalung Country. Growing up in the Northern Rivers during the 1970s, in Upper Main Arm behind Mullumbimby, I was immersed in a community that valued creativity, environmental stewardship, and collective well-being. This upbringing, within a family of artists and free thinkers, instilled in me a profound respect for nature and a commitment to living harmoniously with the land.
My artistic journey began with formal studies in visual arts at the Queensland University of Technology in 1994. However, I soon chose to pursue a path enriched by travel, life experiences, and painting. These experiences led me to a career in paediatric nursing, a role that complements my creative practice by deepening my understanding of care, empathy, and human connection.
In my art, I primarily work with oils on canvas and board, exploring themes of nature, community, family, sexuality, growth, and impermanence. My work is influenced by the landscapes of Bundjalung Country and the rhythms of life within it. I strive to create pieces that resonate with the viewer, inviting contemplation and emotional engagement.
My participation in exhibitions such as "The Art of Woman" at Lismore’s Serpentine Gallery reflects my commitment to celebrating feminine perspectives and intergenerational connections within the arts community . Through my practice, I aim to contribute to a broader dialogue that honors the interconnectedness of people, place, and the natural world.
Yours, Maya
